Chapter Twenty-Four

It was still close to eight when I got to Louis' bar. My usual guitar case with guitar inside was strapped to my back. In my right hand, I was carrying a powder blue guitar case with a glossy, wood finished guitar inside. A face had been painted onto the wood. Closed eyes, long eyelashes. The lips were full and tilted up slightly in a knowing smirk. Then there was the nose that had a hoop earing in the left nostril. I'd known it was a woman on the guitar as soon as I'd seen the hair. It was full of wild curls and sparkles. At some points her hair looked like the ocean, at others, a mountain range. She was beautiful. There was no brand name on that guitar, so I had no idea who had made it. It looked like a Gibson, but if it were, Gibson's name would be all over it. The guitar had been Luna's gift to me. She wouldn't tell me where she'd gotten it or why, just insisted I try it out tonight. After Luna had handed the case to me I'd set it down on the floor. Powder blue. Not exactly my color. Still, I'd taken the guitar out of its case and studied the body for a few seconds before playing it; running my fingers along the smooth finish and over the neck. Then I strapped it on. All it took was strumming an A minor for me to know there was something special about it. The sound that came from it was like auditory gold. I'd never heard anything quite like it.

I played a couple of songs, just to be sure I'd feel comfortable taking it on stage, but the second the smooth tones glided out of that guitar, I knew. The devil take Luna if she tried to get the guitar back from me.

I got to the entrance of The Pit, guitar case in one hand, other guitar case on my back, and effects pedals in a bag slung over my shoulder. This time, nobody was at the door to greet me. I entered the building wondering if the front door was always unlocked. If so, I felt sorry for any unsuspecting fool who wandered inside with bad intentions.

I rode the elevator down. Like last time, the lower I went, the louder the music from the club became. By the time the elevator stopped, the elevator walls were vibrating. I stepped out, not sure of where I should go. Louis' office? The stage to setup?

It was surprisingly crowded at eight. I knew everyone wasn't a vampire, but I was still shocked that there were so many unnaturals in the area that they could fill a space this size. Most of the faces looked human, some looked human with subtle differences. Pointed ears, forked noses, horns, there were even a set of tusks on one man. Others looked far and away from human. There were large creatures fully covered in hair with snouts, tusks, and mops of long brown hair.
